Castle Martinis Marchi, Solta Island
The Castle Heritage Martinis Marchi and the Le château Restaurant are situated at Maslinica, on the Island of Solta, just off the Adriatic coast of Croatia. The small fishing village of Maslinica is virtually part of the decoration of the 300 year old castle with its 5000m2 garden.
The castle was originally built by the Martinis brothers in the early 18th century to help protect the Split mainland and islands from pirate attacks as well as to develop a community to work the land. It has now been returned to its former glory after a massive investment of time and money by its relatively new owners and under the watchful guidance of local Croatian heritage architects and advisors.
The six suites vary in size and are individually designed and furnished to be both true to the castle's original design and to offer the ultimate in quiet elegance and comfort. The reception rooms are equally impressive while the courtyard houses an open-air, heated swimming pool. There is also a heliport in the extensive grounds that themselves display due care and nurturing. The Restaurant terrace offers great views over the bay and, as Maslinica is west-facing, makes a perfect location for a quiet cocktail at sunset.
The test of the restoration is that the Šolta islanders are proud of it as well. In 2010 more advancement should be made with the upgrading of Maslinica's harbour to include more modern marina-style facilities.
