Villa Sancta Maria is a new but very old restored villa with 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. It is on a breathtaking isolated location with a large pool (100 m2; solar heated; opened June-Sept). In the hart of Istrian wine and truffle country. It is overlooking the medieval town of Motovun and has a spectacular view. The coastal town of Novigrad is only 20 km away. The interiors are filled with antique furniture, so it is filled with character but it also has modern technology like WiFi, Air-conditioning, Smart TV.
Many people compare Istria to Tuscany, and one of the reasons are hillside towns like Motovun but every place is unique in its own way. Every year in October and November Motovun, as well as other neighboring villages, get full of visitors who come for the Truffle Days – White Truffle Fair. Festival takes place in a village Livade, very close to Villa Sancta Maria, directly beneath Motovun, for seven weekends starting from the first week of October until mid November. White truffles are fungi that typically grow in northern Italy and Croatia. The largest truffle in the world was found inthe forests of Motovun Istria back in 1999. The founder, Giancarlo Zigante, still holds the world record in the Guinness book of records for the largest white truffle ever found in the world.
This is why still many foodies from around the world come to Istria every year. You probably won't have your own truffle hunting guide, but at least you can enjoy this precious underground jewel in local restaurants, taverns and family farms.
