Located on the northern Dalmatian Coast, Zadar is a quirky addition to any Croatia itinerary. This city may not be as popular as Split or Dubrovnik, BUT the real attraction of Zadar is a history dating back over 3000 years. There is a beautiful main street named Kalelarga - the street running through the old town is in fact the old Roman road, perfectly straight as are the laneways radiating out in all sectors of town. It may even remind you of the Stradun in Dubrovnik. A walk through town is a walk through time, from the Greeks to the Middle Ages and the more recent history of the 20th century. The culture of the centuries is imbued on every sandy stone and old growth tree towering overhead. You can see Roman artifacts and a whole bunch of churches and historic buildings, some dating back to the 9th century.
Aside from its historic old town and string of beaches, the city boasts two particularly unique attractions: Sea Organ, a structure that plays music using the movement of the waves; and The Greeting to the Sun, an installation that collects the sun’s energy during the day, then plays a trippy light show from sunrise to sunset.
„Best sunset in the world“ – If you spend any amount of time in Zadar, someone will at some point tell you of a famous quote associated with Alfred Hitchcock, who checked in 1964 in a hotel on the waterfront in Zadar. The hotel’s location was one of the best in town and it was from there that the famed director expressed his opinion that “The sunset of Zadar is the world’s most beautiful and incomparably better than in Key West, Florida.” This is a fact that Zadar residents have long known, but one has to see it, to believe it.
